Brazil’s athletics scene witnessed a world shattering moment as javelin thrower Luiz Mauricio da Silva launched the spear to a jaw-dropping 91.00 meters, setting a NEW Brazilian and South American record. The throw came during the final round of the 2025 Brazilian Championships, stunning spectators and instantly catapulting da Silva into the global elite of the sport.
At just 23 years old, da Silva became only the 27th athlete in history to cross the 90-meter barrier in men’s javelin, a feat considered the hallmark of elite performance in the discipline. His 91.00m throw now ranks him second in the world for the 2025 season, just behind Germany’s Julian Weber (91.06m) and ahead of Indian Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra (90.23m).
“This moment is a dream realized,” da Silva said after the event. “Crossing 90 meters has been my goal since I picked up the javelin as a teenager. To do it here in Brazil, in front of my people—it’s unforgettable.”
Historically, the javelin has been dominated by European and Asian athletes. Da Silva’s record-breaking performance represents a major breakthrough for South American athletics, and especially for Brazil, where field events have often taken a back seat to sprinting and football.
The previous South American record, held by da Silva himself at 86.34m, was shattered by nearly five meters—an almost unheard-of leap at this level.
