Mykolas Alekna Sets National Best at Lithuanian Championships in Palanga

Palanga, Lithuania – August 2025 — Mykolas Alekna once again proved why he’s the world’s top discus thrower, delivering a historic performance at the Lithuanian national athletics championships held in Palanga from August 1–3.

Saturday afternoon, Alekna launched the discus 72.15 meters, marking the longest throw ever recorded by a Lithuanian athlete on home soil. This throw not only secured him the national title but also thrilled the local crowd with a display of world-class dominance.

Though just shy of his current world record of 75.56 m, Alekna’s throw reaffirmed his status as a global frontrunner and national icon in the sport. The 22-year-old continues to build momentum heading into the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.

“This one means a lot,” Alekna said after the event. “There’s something special about competing at home — in front of your people. I wanted to give them a performance they’d remember.”

The throw adds another milestone to a banner year for Alekna, who has already broken the world record twice in 2025 and recently completed a successful NCAA season in the U.S.

“Mykolas is redefining what it means to be elite,” said his coach, Mantas Jusis. “He didn’t need to push the limits today — but still delivered something historic. That’s the mark of a true champion.”
